I go before you always
Come follow me
And I will give you rest
The words above echoes the chorus of a song that I have fell in love
with last year. How many of us have excessive fears in our life? How
many of us are afraid to sleep in the dark? How many of us are afraid of
failures, rejection and the crimes of the world?
As I was walking to church today on the all too familiar paths along an alley, I recalled an incident that happened right in this alley almost six years ago. As I was walking peacefully along the road, a motorcyclist snatched my sling bag and left me in utter shock. Few meters down the road, his bike fell, along with my bag, lying on the road. To my amazement, I grabbed my bag and started running while screaming for help at the top of my lungs. He chased me with grievous anger. A car passed by. I quickly knocked on the door and went in the car without thinking twice and this kind driver drove me home. God truly sent angels when you need them.
Many days passed by with those fears of being snatched again embedded in my heart. I was traumatized. What if that snatch thief had gotten hold of me and attacks me and kills me? Well, that incident scarred me. Every time I went for a walk and a motorcycle passed me, I would jump and fears would take hold of me.
Slowly, I learnt to surrender my fears to the Lord. He taught me to live by faith that He will protect me wherever I go. Do not get me wrong. I am not saying bravery without prudence but not letting fears get in the way of experiencing God’s fullness.
There are two verses that never fail to console me when I feel fears penetrating my heart.
Psalm 91:11For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Today, I can walk through that alley again and this time, I am not afraid because I have God with me. He has promised that He will be with me at all times and with that, I surrender all my fears at Christ’s feet. He will take care of them and give me courage. What is there to be afraid of when your loving Father holds you by His hand?
Are you afraid?
Whatever scars life has given you, pray and surrender all your fears to God. Cling on to Him, follow Him and He will give you peace, rest in your heart and courage.
God bless.
